Writing
The writing finalists (chaired by Dr Sue Ogle, judged by Julie Chevalier, NSW Writer's Centre) were a mix of poetry and short stories. The Judge's winner was Dr Genevieve Yates, GP from country Queensland, with: 'Life in limbo, destination denied', a story about one woman's infertility merry-go-round. People's Choice went to Dr Jan Orman for her story of 'Roy' a musical misfit.
Visual arts
This section (chaired by Dr Helen Parsons, judged by Mary Brown, Visual Arts lecturer) had entries from Dr Marc Grunseit, (Judge's Award), with his 'Curved glass installation in TV' and Dr Anne Lourandos (People's Choice) with her 'Portrait of a woman'.
Photography
This section was chaired by Dr Tony Chu, judged by Patrick Cummins, former photographer Sydney Morning Herald. The Judge's winner was Dr Bridgette Watts, a Hobart GP with 'The Chicken Man, Nepal' and People's Choice was Dr Jolita Theron, Strathpine GP, 'Two vastly different journeys', a close-up of black and white faces side by side.
Film
The finalist film titled 'Tuesday', won by Dr Grace Walpole (Vic), was a dance sequence of small intimate moments from bed to out-the-door and quite beautiful. In addition, the highlight of the festival was a collection of 3 invited short films which explored science-fiction, comedy and horror. 'Mr Morag's Helical Dreams' was a sci-fi film on human cloning for body parts by Dr Alex Nakone (GP Adelaide). The special effects of blood raining down on a patient in the desert were most impressive. 'Surgical Heroes' drew lots of laughs as a farcical commentary on surgical subspecialties presented by Dr Tony C.H. Chu, Gosford Anaesthetist. 'Be My Valentine' showcased a new horror genre with men-eating spider-women by Dr Tony Chu, Paediatric Registrar, Sydney.
Performance
Chaired by Dr Cathy Fraser, we were treated to seven acts by four very talented doctors. Singer/song-writer Dr Loyola McLean was the Judge's winner. Dr Genevieve Yates won the People's Choice with three different performances to showcase her talents in singing, violin and dramatic performance. Amelia Tranter, performer and graduate of Academy Dramatic Arts, was our in-house judge and gave excellent feedback and commented that the regular actors might soon be out of work displaced by creative doctors!
